Three Renowned Energy Researchers Join University of Houston

The University of Houston has recruited three renowned researchers working in the energy field – two members of the National Academy of Engineering and one member of the National Academy of Sciences – as part of the Governor’s University Research Initiative (GURI).

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced the hires Thursday, part of an effort to recruit nationally recognized researchers to Texas institutions of higher education.

UH Engineer Improves Computer Model to Find Better Oil Spill Remediation Strategies

Di Yang, assistant professor of mechanical engineering

After a major oil spill, government agencies and energy companies have limited time to make decisions on how to remediate the disaster and clean up the spilled oil. Officials currently rely on computational models that predict the behavior of the oil plume in order to determine the best strategies for containing and cleaning up the oil.

Earlier this month, the University of Houston’s Society of Women Engineers hosted its 4th annual “Launch Into Engineering” event, inviting hundreds of local high school students to learn about engineering disciplines in a dynamic campus environment.

UH Students Design Energy Efficient, Affordable Homes

With plans to capture the power of Houston’s sun and reuse its abundant rainfall, a group of University of Houston students has completed the first phase of an ambitious project to rethink affordable housing and energy efficiency.

Three interdisciplinary teams have been named winners of the Energy Efficiency Innovation Challenge, sponsored by Direct Energy and UH Energy. Ultimately, organizers plan to build the winning designs in Houston’s Third Ward, near the UH campus.
