NSF, DOE Partner to Support UH Diesel Emissions Research

Much of this diesel emissions reduction research will be conducted at the Texas Center for Clean Engines, Emissions and Fuels, a UH-based center dedicated to developing and testing advanced power-train, renewable or alternative fuels and emission control systems for local, state and federal governments as well as the energy, engine and emission control industries.

One of the ironies of automobile research: as diesel engines become more fuel efficient, reducing their emissions becomes more challenging.

Better efficiency means that more of the energy in diesel fuel is being used to move the vehicle and less is escaping out the tailpipe in the form of heat. While this is undoubtedly good, it presents a challenge for emissions reduction.

Engineering Professors Among Those Honored for Faculty Excellence

The University of Houston honors its faculty each year for their teaching, research and service contributions during the annual UH Faculty Excellence Awards ceremony. Held this year on April 20, five Cullen College of Engineering faculty received high honors for excellence in teaching, research and mentoring, while 17 faculty were recognized for years of service.

College Research Expenditures See Increase, Set Record

Research grant and contract expenditures by University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering faculty totaled more than $21.8 million in fiscal year 2009, the largest ever on record.

Up some 50 percent from the previous fiscal year’s total, primarily the federal government—the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy—supported the research.

Engineering Faculty Member Named Moores Professor

Donnelly

Vincent M. Donnelly, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, has been named a recipient of the John and Rebecca Moores Professorship.

The Moores professorship is a five-year renewable award given to full-time, tenured faculty who have made outstanding contributions in the areas of teaching, service and research.

The award, given to only two people a year at UH, carries with it a $10,000 stipend.

Engineering Faculty Recognized for Teaching, Research

Dean Joseph Tedesco recognized UH Cullen College of Engineering faculty members for outstanding teaching and research during the 2007-2008 academic year at the college's Spring Faculty/Staff Meeting on April 29.

Vemuri Balakotaiah, Karolos Grigoriadis, David Shattuck and Osman Ghazzaly were among 15 scholars honored at the event held April 22 at the UH Hilton Hotel.

Cullen College Faculty Members Honored at Awards Ceremony

Three Cullen College of Engineering faculty members were honored Tuesday at a University of Houston luncheon where 17 UH educators and researchers received awards based on nominations from faculty, staff and alumni.

William G. Rixey, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, received the Enron Corporation Teaching Excellence Award, which carries a $5,000 stipend and a trophy and is made possible by a fully funded endowment.

Vemuri Balakotaiah, Professor of Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering Professor and University of Houston alumnus Vemuri Balakotaiah has been chosen as a John and Rebecca Moores Professor for his outstanding contributions to teaching, research and service at UH. This five-year position will begin with the 2002-2003 academic year.
