Dean Joseph Tedesco recognized UH Cullen College of Engineering faculty members for outstanding teaching and research during the 2007-2008 academic year at the college's Spring Faculty/Staff Meeting on April 29.

Demetre Economou, John and Rebecca Moores Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, was honored with the Fluor Daniel Faculty Excellence Award, the highest award given by the college. Shankar Chellam, professor of civil and environmental engineering, received the W.T. Kittinger Teaching Excellence Award, the college's most prestigious teaching honor. Stuart Long, professor of electrical and computer engineering and associate dean for educational activities, received the Career Teaching Award for excellence in teaching and service to students.

Outstanding Teaching Awards were given to Tiravat Assavapokee, assistant professor of industrial engineering; Vemuri Balakotaiah, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering; Charles Dalton, professor of mechanical engineering; John Glover, professor of electrical and computer engineering; Bill Rixey, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering; and Len Trombetta, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Thomas Chen, research professor in industrial engineering, and Adam Capitano, lecturer for the Biomedical Engineering Program, received this year's Outstanding Lecturer Awards, while graduate students Mohammed Baharnemati (industrial engineering), Osman Kanlioglu (electrical and computer engineering), and Ed Lewis (chemical and biomolecular engineering) were honored with Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards.

Mike Harold, professor and chair of chemical and biomolecular engineering, received the 2007 Senior Faculty Research Award and Pradeep Sharma, associate professor of mechanical engineering, received the Junior Faculty Research Award.
