William A. Brookshire Leaves Legacy of Generosity and Dedication to the Cullen College

On May 19 at 1:30 p.m. Dr. Brookshire’s family will host a memorial on the UH campus at the Student Center, Houston Room. Friends and family are invited.

UH alumnus William A. Brookshire, Ph.D. (BSChE '57), co-founder and chairman of the board of S&B Engineers and Constructors, died on April 21, 2017.

Joseph Tedesco, Elizabeth D. Rockwell Dean of the Cullen College of Engineering said, “Dr. Brookshire was a fine gentleman and one of our great philanthropists, always in search of new ways to help students and professors. We will forever feel his generosity and his loss in equal measures.”

Alumni of the industrial engineering department at UH can be found in leadership positions throughout the Houston region.

It started as a conversation among friends, about a common issue of college life: the price of textbooks. Ade Adesanya (BSEE '11) recalls the discussion with Eric Imasogie (BSIE '10). "We decided there is no reason why anyone should sell a used book to the bookstore," he said. "You spend $200 on a book and the bookstore buys it back for a fraction of that. The ideal thing would be for students to sell or trade books to each other."

The Space Shuttle Atlantis successfully began the program’s final mission today, and Cullen College of Engineering alumnus Rex Walheim was onboard.

Walheim earned his master’s degree in industrial engineering from the college in 1989. He was selected as an astronaut in 1996 and went on his first space flight in 2002.

Two UH Engineering Graduates Separated by 70 Years

A lifetime separates two special University of Houston engineering students who are graduating this spring. David Levy is receiving two bachelor's degrees, one in mechanical engineering and the other in mathematics. George Hall, meanwhile, is getting his master's degree in industrial engineering. Levy is 16 and Hall is 86, a 70-year age difference.

Industrial Engineering Department Holds Annual Awards Banquet

Four industrial engineering alumni were recognized April 24 with one of the department’s highest honors during their annual awards banquet.

Salah Turkmani, Patrick O’ Connor, Rex Walheim and Darshan Singh were each presented with the 2008 Academy of Distinguished Alumni Awards.

College Alum Aboard Upcoming Atlantis Mission

UH Cullen College of Engineering alum Rex Walheim (1989 MSIE) will be aboard the Atlantis (STS-122) mission when it blasts off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on February 7. The launch has been delayed twice due to the failure of two engine cutoff sensors.
