UH Cullen College Industrial Engineering Paper on Mass Evacuation Receives International Recognition

Paper Published in Two IISE Publications

Industrial engineers make things and systems better for people. In Gino Lim’s case, it can involve reliable mass evacuation planning in situations of critical emergencies.

“A reliable evacuation plan is key to successful mass evacuation,” said Lim, a professor and chair of the industrial engineering department at the UH Cullen College of Engineering and Hari and Anjali Agrawal Faculty Fellow.

UH Cullen College Alumnus Leads UHCL’s College of Science and Engineering

UH Cullen College of Engineering alumnus Miguel A. Gonzalez is the new dean of the College of Science and Engineering at University of Houston-Clear Lake.

UH Cullen College of Engineering alumnus Miguel A. Gonzalez (’83, MSIE ’85, Ph.D. IE ’95) recently took the helm as the new dean of the College of Science and Engineering at University of Houston-Clear Lake. He will also serve as a professor of engineering.

Accepting the appointment brought Gonzalez full circle to his roots. For him, his new job is more of a homecoming.

The UH Cullen College of Engineering hosted its 30th annual Offshore Industry Crawfish Boil on Sunday, May 5 at Lynn Eusan Park.

Thousands of alumni, faculty, students and industry leaders gathered to network and mingle as they enjoyed crawfish, bbq, beer, drinks and live music.

Since its inception, the annual spring event has raised over $1 million to benefit engineering scholarship and academic programs.

Victor Zaloom (Ph.D. IE '70) is a man with interests as broad and deep as the industrial engineering (IE) field in which he works. A professor of industrial engineering at Lamar University, Zaloom has really done it all, working in research, industry, teaching and academic administration. But it is his passion for teaching, influencing and shaping the next-generation of industrial engineers that continues to drive him.

UH Alumnus Wins Prestigious National Engineering Award

Houston civil engineer D. Wayne Klotz (1976 MSCE) has added another feather in his cap. The University of Houston alumnus recently became the fourth recipient of an Outstanding Practitioner in Water Resources Engineering Award from the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE), a subsidiary of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

IE Alumnus Eric Ayanegui Engineers Safety, Reliability and Lifelong Relationships

It was 1995 and Eric Ayanegui (BSIE ’95) was an industrial engineering undergraduate student at the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering. He found himself in unfamiliar surroundings – at the Cintas Facility and Uniform Services plant a few miles from UH – nervously presenting findings from his class project on improving quality control in their garment inspection department.

William A. Brookshire Leaves Legacy of Generosity and Dedication to the Cullen College

On May 19 at 1:30 p.m. Dr. Brookshire’s family will host a memorial on the UH campus at the Student Center, Houston Room. Friends and family are invited.

UH alumnus William A. Brookshire, Ph.D. (BSChE '57), co-founder and chairman of the board of S&B Engineers and Constructors, died on April 21, 2017.

Joseph Tedesco, Elizabeth D. Rockwell Dean of the Cullen College of Engineering said, “Dr. Brookshire was a fine gentleman and one of our great philanthropists, always in search of new ways to help students and professors. We will forever feel his generosity and his loss in equal measures.”

It started as a conversation among friends, about a common issue of college life: the price of textbooks. Ade Adesanya (BSEE '11) recalls the discussion with Eric Imasogie (BSIE '10). "We decided there is no reason why anyone should sell a used book to the bookstore," he said. "You spend $200 on a book and the bookstore buys it back for a fraction of that. The ideal thing would be for students to sell or trade books to each other."

Cullen College Alum Aboard Atlantis

The Space Shuttle Atlantis successfully began the program’s final mission today, and Cullen College of Engineering alumnus Rex Walheim was onboard.

Walheim earned his master’s degree in industrial engineering from the college in 1989. He was selected as an astronaut in 1996 and went on his first space flight in 2002.
