The Cullen College of Engineering extends its condolences to the family and friends of Ganesh L. Ghurye, Ph.D., a distinguished graduate of the college and the University of Houston.

Ganesh passed away after a three-year battle with Stage IV cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Shilpa Ghurye, Ph.D.; his two daughters, Shalini and Manali; and his canine companions, Wolfie, Deedee, and Idli.

Ganesh earned his doctorate in Environmental Engineering from Cullen in 2003. He lived in Pearland and worked for more than 15 years for ExxonMobil. He received author credit on eight different papers, including two focusing on the removal of arsenic from water. He worked closely with Dennis Clifford, professor emeritus, on this research.

Ganesh was most proud of his daughters, considering them his crowning achievement. Shalini is finishing her fourth year at Texas Tech with plans to pursue a residency in family medicine, and Manali is a student at Cullen. He also created scholarships for young children from impoverished communities in India that wanted to pursue education.

A small memorial with friends and family was held Thursday in Pearland. A celebration of his life will be held in the coming month. His online obituary can be found on Legacy.
