Six students from the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston have been honored by the Great Minds in STEM organization as 2020 scholars, and been rewarded with scholarships.

For more than 30 years, GMiS has served as an educational and national 501(c)3 nonprofit, whose vision is to be a national leader in keeping America technologically strong by promoting science, technology, engineering and math careers, especially in underserved communities.

The list of University of Houston students receiving scholarships, and the sponsors for those scholarships, are:

  • The Boeing Company: Jose Vargas, senior, Mechanical Engineering
  • Davila/Treviño Memorial Scholarships: Nina Contreras, junior, Mechanical Engineering
  • Davila/Treviño Memorial Scholarships: Emanuel Sanchez, sophomore, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
  • Dow Chemical: Aaron Perez, Masters, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
  • Rui Vogt Alves da Cruz Family Scholarship: Lupita Herrera, sophomore, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

4 Cullen College graduate students honored for posters

Four students from the Cullen College of Engineering are among the winners of this year's University of Houston Graduate Research Showcase Virtual Poster Session.

Held on March 22, the event showcases the breadth and depth of groundbreaking research being undertaken by UH graduate students across disciplines, as well as to offer opportunities for cross-disciplinary networking. The Top 10 graduate student winners received a scholarship award.

Three graduate students receive TcSUH scholarships

Three graduate students from the Cullen College of Engineering have received scholarships from the Texas Center for Superconductivity at the University of Houston (TcSUH), as recognition for their work inside and outside of the classroom.

All three students received Cora Hawley Scholarships. According to the TcSUH, she established the scholarships to further the careers of exceptional students aligned with TcSUH research programs. The recipients for the 2021-22 academic year are:

23 honored with 2020-21 Faculty and Student Excellence Awards

The W.T. Kittinger Teaching Excellence Award is traditionally the highest teaching award given in the College. It recognizes outstanding teaching and service to students. This year's recipient is Di Yang of Mechanical Engineering.

The Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston and Dr. Joseph W. Tedesco, Ph.D., P.E., the Elizabeth D. Rockwell Endowed Chair and Dean, are pleased to share the 2020-21 Faculty and Student Excellence Award winners.

The initial announcement was made during the virtual Spring 2021 State of the College Address on May 4.
