Annual banquet celebrates the outstanding achievements made by students with scholarships and awards.

On April 25, the UH Cullen College’s industrial engineering (IE) department hosted its annual Honors and Awards Banquet at UH Hilton- Waldorf Astoria Ballroom.

The formal affair brought together IE students, alumni, faculty and staff to celebrate the outstanding achievements made by students with scholarships and awards. 

Department chair, Gino Lim, welcomed guests with opening remarks and provided department updates. UH Board of Regents member, Durga D. Agrawal (M.S. ’69, Ph.D. ’74), served as keynote speaker for the evening.

The event also recognized outstanding staff and faculty members in the department.

John Vasek, UH Institute of Industrial Engineers student chapter treasurer, recognized instructional associate professor Tae woo Lee with the Outstanding Teacher Award.

Instructional Assistant professor Dr. Yaping Wang introduced IE student chapter officers and introduced the new 2019-2020 officers for UH’s Institute of Industrial Engineers student chapter.

The event was sponsored by Cintas, Tenaris and the UH Cullen College of Engineering.

UH grad Walheim continues to plot course for the stars

Rex Walheim, a 1989 graduate of the Industrial Engineering Masters program at UH, is now at the private company Axiom Space after retiring from NASA. The agency noted that he spent almost 36 years in government service, 36 days in space, and 36 hours on spacewalks.

When Rex Walheim first enrolled at the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering's Masters program in Industrial Engineering in the 1980s, his goals were literally sky high. At the time, he was a flight controller at the Johnson Space Center and a lieutenant in the United States Air Force, and he hadn't yet flown a vessel himself.

Lin receives Sub-Award on NIH grant for work on psychiatric genetics

Dr. Ying Lin, a professor at the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering, was awarded a $435,017 grant to continue research on identifying underlying genetic contributors to some forms of psychiatric illness.
