The UH chapter of the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) recently attended the 2012 MAES National Symposium in Las Vegas. The four-day conference is held to promote academic and professional advancement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines.

Events included a career and graduate school fair, a college decathlon, research poster competition, networking breakfasts with company representatives, and a professional workshop series with topics including career management and exploration.

Thirty students representing the UH MAES chapter attended the symposium, including a number of attendees who received scholarships and awards. Electrical engineering junior Elizabeth Martinez was one of three UH students to be awarded academic scholarships. Biomedical engineering senior Megan Planas, biomedical engineering sophomore Lilian Rodriguez, mechanical engineering sophomore Homero Benavides, and biomedical engineering senior Edgar Nancanieno received registration grants to attend the symposium, from contributors such as Exxon and Lockheed Martin.

Three students presented research in the undergraduate research poster competition: Megan Planas, and mechanical engineering sophomores Bryan Lopez and Osvaldo Rocha.

The UH MAES chapter also received the Chapter of the Year for Professional Development award, out of 32 student chapters
