Stuart Long, electrical & computer engineering professor and associate dean in the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering, will be recognized with a 2002 Outstanding Faculty Award from the Houston Alumni Organization. The awards will be presented during the Alumni Organization's Annual Meeting/Jazz Brunch at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Athletics/Alumni Center.
"The HAO Outstanding Faculty Awards are given to recognize the achievements of faculty who have made outstanding contributions to their students by means of their teaching and support for the students in the university community. Stuart has excelled in both," says Lawrence Curry, the chair of the Outstanding Faculty and Staff Awards. "Dr. Long is one of the university's good citizens, in my opinion, and richly deserves the honor HAO is giving him."
Long earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Rice University and Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University.
He worked for a year as an Aerosystems Engineer in the antenna design group at General Dynamics, Fort Worth, designing electronic countermeasure antennas for F-111 aircraft. From 1970-1974, Long was a Teaching Fellow and Research Assistant at Harvard University. This work was followed by two summers at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories, New Mexico, as a Research Assistant designing electric field probes for linear accelerators.
Long joined the UH faculty in 1974. He served as chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering for 15 years and served as associate dean for research for five years.
At UH, Long teaches both graduate and undergraduate classes in applied electronics. His students learn about electromagnetic waves, antenna engineering, microwave engineering and electromagnetic theory.
The university recognized Long with the Halliburton Award of Excellence as the outstanding teacher of engineering in 1983, and the University Teaching Excellence Award in 1991. The Engineering Alumni Association recognized him in 1992 with the Distinguished Faculty Award. In 1994, the IEE/HKN students chose Long as the outstanding teacher in electrical engineering. The Cullen College of Engineering recognized their distinguished professor with the Senior Research Award in 1995.
Currently, Long is a registered professional engineer, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and associate dean for education development & outreach in the Cullen College of Engineering. He is extremely involved in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. and served as President of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society.
Long is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, and Commission B of URSI, was elected to membership in the Electromagnetics Academy in 1990, and became a Fellow of the IEEE in 1991. He served as the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Distinguished Lecturer for 1992-94, and was a recipient of the IEEE Millennium Medal in 2000.
