Cullen College of Engineering staff were among the almost 500 University of Houston volunteers who helped students find their way around campus at the 5th Annual Cougar First Impressions (CFI).
This was the third year that engineering had it's own table, which is located between the two engineering buildings.
"Ever since we started manning our own table, it's alleviated traffic in our offices of lost students looking for classrooms or other buildings," said Mary Schulz, CFI engineering table coordinator and academic advising specialist for the Cullen College of Engineering. "Most importantly, it's fun and everyone who volunteers enjoys it. We never have trouble getting staff to volunteer each year."
Sponsored by UH Staff Council, CFI helps make the first two days of the fall semester, Aug. 26 and 27, a little easier for everyone. This year, volunteers stationed at 18 locations across campus serviced 18,142 students.
"We are very pleased with the amount of help we provided the students," said Angie Shortt, CFI co-chair and director of communications for the Cullen College of Engineering. "There were several classroom locations that were difficult for students to find, and we got repeated questions that we answered throughout the day. We are thankful to all the volunteers who helped make this another successful year."
Engineering volunteers included Brian Allen, James Andress, MyTrang Baccam, Pilar Garcia, Sharon Gates, Loretta Herbek, Trina Johnson, Kim Jordan, Sandra Luna, Shirley Mate, Ursula Ollivierre, Charlotte Palm, Lupe Pesina, Dawnelle Prince, Shirley Ray, Mary Reed, Adele Rena, Jenny Ruchhoeft, Mary Schulz, Michelle Stevenson-Shaw, Barbara Torres and Shelia White.
