NSBE's 27th Annual Career Fair Draws Companies To UH

The University of Houston chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is hosting their 27th Annual Career Fair on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the UH Hilton Hotel.

Last year's event brought together 39 companies and more than 700 UH students majoring in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics and business.

"What I like about this career fair is that the companies tell you exactly what they're looking for and you get a feel for what it would be like working for them," said Marcha Thomas-Blades, senior chemical engineering student, at last year's event.

In addition to speaking directly with company representatives, UH students also have the opportunity to circulate their résumés. Before the career fair, students deliver their résumés to the NSBE student office, where they were scanned onto a CD and given to each participating company.

Some of the companies committed this year include ABB Lummus Global, Air Liquide America, Atofina Petrochemicals, BASF Corporation, Berwanger Inc., BP, Cameron, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, Chevron Texaco, City of Houston, Data Systems & Solutions, Dow Chemicals, El Paso Corporation, Exxon Mobil, Flour Corporation, HP, Lyondell Chemical Company, Lyondell-Citgo Refining, Navy Recruiting, Phillips Petroleum Company, Reliant Energy Incorporated, Reynolds, Smith & Hills, Shell Oil Company, Stone & Webster, STP Nuclear Operating Company, and the Texas Department of Transportation.

NSBE, with 8,000 members nationwide, is one of the largest student-managed organizations in the country. The Society is dedicated to the realization of a better tomorrow through the development of intensive programs for increasing the recruitment, retention and successful graduation of minorities in engineering.
