Over the past few years, Shirley Mate has helped engineer the academic paths of literally hundreds of University of Houston students.

Mate, who joined the university as a temporary employee nine years ago, works in the Cullen College of Engineering as academic advisor 1. Her job entails assisting and guiding undergraduate students through the process of applying for graduation, coordinating class and instructors’ evaluations, responding to inquiries from students and coordinating the college’s scholarship program.

In recognition of her efforts for the college and university, Mate was honored with the university’s George Magner Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising.

“I am pleased that people took the time to nominate me. I love working with people in this office,” Mate said.

Perhaps, it is the love of her job and the university that motivates Mate to do her best.

“What I admire about Shirley is that she goes far above her job description in performing her duties,” wrote Larry C. Witte, Cullen College of Engineering associate dean for undergraduate programs, in his letter supporting Mate for the award. “Shirley provides excellent customer service, displays creativity and promotes new ideas.”

In her letter of support, Betty Barr, director of undergraduate studies in the electrical and computer engineering department, wrote, “I have been impressed with her dedication to her job and to the students she serves.”
