UH Society of Black Engineers Encourage Promising Career for Teens During Campus 'Shadow Day'

Good engineers will be in high demand in the years to come, so now is the time for high school students to consider engineering as a career. University of Houston students in the Cullen College of Engineering welcomed a dozen area high school students for the UH National Society of Black Engineers’ first Shadow Day on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001. The event coincided with National Engineers Week.

Approximately 40 junior and senior high school students from Hightower High School, Booker T. Washington High School, Barbara Jordan High School and Madison High School shadowed UH engineering students for the day. Students were matched up with collegiate partners, toured the campus, learned about engineering and sait in on an afternoon class with an engineering student.

National Engineers Week is celebrated each year around the birthday of first president George Washington, who was a military engineer and a land surveyor.
