Faculty Course Buy Out

Buy-outs from teaching and service duties are possible under two circumstances: (i) as part of cost-share if required by the grant. A cost-share document must be in place, which requires approval of both the respective department head and the dean. (ii) Occasionally, faculty may buy out a course by using discretionary funds or by buying out their academic salary. This must also be approved by both the department head and the dean. Those with one course/semester teaching load are strongly discouraged from buying out except under extenuating circumstances and well-justified (and approved) reasons. The college minimum buyout for a course is one month of the faculty salary. Department heads may set a higher rate.
