The National Science Foundation has awarded $510,000 to Peter Vekilov, John and Rebecca Moores Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and chemistry, to conduct the first fundamental work about how the nature of solvents impact the crystallization process.
The scientist who made the first advancement in the treatment of kidney stones in three decades, Jeffrey Rimer, Ernest J. and Barbara M. Henley Associate Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, has been awarded for his work two more times.

In 2015 the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to Chinese scientist Youyou Tu for her discovery of a novel malaria treatment rooted in traditional Chinese medicine. Tu isolated the drug artemisinin from an herb used to treat malaria in China for more than 2,000 years.
The University of Houston-Materials Research Society Chapter (UH-MRS) hosted its first student symposium in the main lobby of engineering building 1. At the symposium students presented their work to an esteemed crowd of professional members across various engineering and science disciplines at UH. The 40 presenters came from different departments including chemistry, physics; and chemical, mechanical, materials and electrical engineering.
Researchers have found evidence that a natural fruit extract is capable of dissolving calcium oxalate crystals, the most common component of human kidney stones. This finding could lead to the first advance in the treatment of calcium oxalate stones in 30 years.
The UH Cullen College of Engineering hosted this year’s Southwest Catalysis Society (SWCS) Symposium on April 22, 2016. Two Cullen College Ph.D. students received awards at the Spring Symposium of the Southwest Catalysis Society’s poster contest month on the UH campus. Matthew Oleksiak and Manjesh Kumar received top honors for their posters, “Controlling Crystal Polymorphism in Organice-Free Synthesis of Zeolites” and “Tuning the Physicochemical Properties of Zeolite Catalysts Through Molecular Design,” respectively.
Zeolites play an important role in your day to day life. These crystalline materials are used as adsorbents and catalysts in a variety of chemical processes, spanning applications from gasoline production to additives for laundry detergent – not to mention thousands of other commercial and consumer products.
