In the high-energy world of Ashutosh Agrawal, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, two things turn the head of the man who always seems to be spinning with excitement about science: Discovering how nature works and seeing what happens when students understand it.

“The two best parts of this profession are when you discover something fundamental and when you see that spark of understanding in a student’s eyes when you explain it,” said Agrawal.

How the Guardian of Our DNA Gets its Donut-Like Structure

Deep within your body there exists donut-shaped objects – many of them, in fact. No, these donuts aren’t from the box of Shipley’s that mysteriously disappeared, despite the fact your diet had just started. These particular donuts are the membranes of the nuclear envelope, which surround and protect the cell’s nucleus, where the all-important genetic material, or DNA, is stored.

Cullen College Welcomes Nine New Faculty Members

The Cullen College of Engineering’s strategic plan to achieve tier one status includes a significant increase in its faculty count. With nine new tenured or tenure-track faculty members joining the college for the 2011fall semester, it is clearly making great progress toward that goal. These faculty members run the gamut from newly minted Ph.D.s to a highly respected member of the National Academy of Engineering. They are:
