UH Distinguished Professor Emeritus to Be Honored by American Academy of Environmental Engineers

University of Houston environmental engineering professor emeritus James M. Symons has been invited to Washington, D.C., to receive the 2003 Edward J. Cleary Award from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE).

William C. Anderson, executive director of AAEE, informed Symons that the award is presented "to a Diplomate to recognize: 'outstanding performance in the management of environmental protection enterprises conducted under either public or private auspices."

Civil Engineering Professor Rogers Honored by ASCE

Jerry Rogers was preparing to give a presentation titled "Early Civil Engineering Education and History" at a morning session of the 150th Annual Conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers when he was surprised with a framed "Resolution" from the ASCE National History & Heritage Committee.

On the Waterfront: Professor Rifai is profiled in the latest issue of Collegium Magazine

Hanadi Rifai, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, credits her love of the ocean as a deciding factor in choosing a career that has led her to head a $3.2 million study funded by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. She will study dioxins in the Houston Ship Channel, one of the busiest waterways in the United States.

Cullen College Faculty Members Honored at Awards Ceremony

Three Cullen College of Engineering faculty members were honored Tuesday at a University of Houston luncheon where 17 UH educators and researchers received awards based on nominations from faculty, staff and alumni.

William G. Rixey, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, received the Enron Corporation Teaching Excellence Award, which carries a $5,000 stipend and a trophy and is made possible by a fully funded endowment.
