Engineering Students Present at Undergraduate Research Day

Michael Leba spent this past summer engrossed in the beginnings of a research project that may one-day aid diabetics.

Only last month did the senior biomedical engineering major finish the 10-week stint in the University of Houston’s Biomedical Optics Laboratory where he devoted hours to determining whether there is a direct correlation between cornea thickness and changes in glucose concentrations.

Engineering Professor to Head NIH Study Section


Ralph W. Metcalfe, professor of mechanical and biomedical engineering and mathematics, was recently appointed chair of the National Institutes of Health Cardiovascular Devices Study Section.

The study section’s scientific review administrator selected Metcalfe, who has served on the section since June 2004, for the position.

Engineering Organizations Present Professor With High Honors


Two engineering organizations earlier this year presented awards to Kirill V. Larin, assistant professor of biomedical and mechanical engineering, for achievements in his biomedical optics and imaging research.

The 2008 Outstanding Young Scientist Award was presented to Larin in February by the Houston Society for Engineering in Medicine and Biology. The award recognized him for significant success in his first five years of research.

College Offering Scholarships for Accelerated B.S. to Graduate Program

NSF grant will fund more than 30 students over the next five years

The University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering has won a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to provide scholarships for students in the college’s accelerated B.S. to graduate degree program.

Junior Austin Head spends 11 weeks investigating nanotechnology through the NanoJapan Program

It is not uncommon for undergraduate engineering students to seek out research opportunities over summer break, nor is it unusual for them to take a few weeks to travel overseas. This summer, Austin Head, a junior biomedical engineering major with the Cullen College of Engineering, got to do both through the NSF-funded NanoJapan Program.

Navy Taps UH Researcher to Develop Diagnostic Tool

For as long as the U.S. Navy has had scuba divers, submarines and airplane pilots, it has had to deal with the effects of decompression sickness. This condition, which affects those who experience sudden, drastic changes in the air or water pressure surrounding their bodies, can cause anything from joint pain—better known as the bends—to seizure, stroke, coma, and, in the most extreme cases, death.

Physicians and Engineers Pool Resources to Prevent Stroke

Ralph Metcalfe, professor of mechanical engineering and deputy director of the UH biomedical engineering program, and his graduate student, Aishwarya Mantha, are working on a new tool to improve brain aneurysm treatment. Metcalfe and Mantha are working with physicians and scientists at the Methodist Neurological Institute (NI) to determine which brain aneurysms are at highest risk of rupture and could cause a stroke.

Student Researchers Honored at Sigma Xi Research Day

Several members of the Cullen College of Engineering were honored at the annual research day of the University of Houston chapter of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society and global honor society of scientists and engineers.

UH Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program a Success

Biomedical engineering undergraduate students at the UH Cullen College of Engineering gained ‘real world’ experience while participating in a research-intensive summer internship program at The Methodist Hospital. The students explored several areas of study within the biomedical field, while researching under the direction of mentors in pathology, neurology, radiology, and cardiology laboratories.

UH Biomedical Engineering Junior Wins Fellowship for Model of Human Vascular System

The American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) awarded a $500 fellowship to University of Houston biomedical engineering junior Hassan Khalil at their 51st Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. last weekend. The ten awards offered by ASAIO are separated into two categories—one for undergraduate students and another for graduate students and professional engineers. Khalil was awarded a fellowship from the latter group.

Metcalfe, Vekilov Named Deputy Directors for Biomedical Engineering Program

The Biomedical Engineering Program, which was launched last fall by the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering, is quickly attaining a full staff with director Matt Franchek naming Ralph Metcalfe and Peter Vekilov as deputy directors for the program. Franchek, who has been recognized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineering Dynamic Systems and funded by the National Science Foundation, serves as the mechanical engineering chairman.

New Biomedical Engineering Program Set to Launch at UH in Fall

Plans to begin a new Biomedical Engineering Program at the University of Houston cleared one last administrative hurdle recently when the Texas Coordinating Board granted its approval for a new undergraduate program in the field. The program will be launched at the UH Cullen College of Engineering this fall semester.

Dunn Foundation to Give UH $500,000 for Biomedical Engineering Endowed Professorship

In support of the University of Houston's new biomedical engineering program, the Houston-based John S. Dunn Research Foundation has committed $500,000 to establish an endowed professorship.

The grant that creates the first John S. Dunn Professorship in Biomedical Engineering will support a faculty member in the Cullen College of Engineering who can broaden course offerings, spearhead new research, and increase working relationships with the Texas Medical Center.

UH Undergraduate Council OKs Degree in Biomedical Engineering

UH took another important step toward establishing a new degree program during Wednesday's Undergraduate Council meeting.

Larry Williams, biology professor and chairman of the council's committee on degree programs, presented a proposal to recommend to the administration that a bachelor's of science degree in biomedical engineering be created.
