Banner Bearer Averey Mokry is graduating with her BS in Human Resource Development later this month.

“Put yourself out there, and be bold. Stepping out of your comfort zone is the best way to gain skills, create memories and have meaningful experiences in your life,” Mokry says.

Averey Mokry, who will soon graduate with her degree in Human Resource Development at the upcoming Cullen College of Engineering Commencement ceremony, is excited to see her grandparents’ reactions when they find out that she carries the honor of being the Fall 2025 banner bearer.

“I was really shocked!” she said. “I was not even thinking about graduation quite yet, but I am very grateful for the opportunity.”

Mokry chose to major in Human Resource Development because she felt interested in teaching but didn’t necessarily want to work in the school system, and she “fell in love with adult learning” during her time at the University of Houston. After graduation, she hopes to find a position in learning and development.

“I think my greatest difficulty has been dealing with the uncertainty of graduation and what my life will look like post-grad, but I have really enjoyed being a part of the Delta Zeta sisterhood in my time at UH,” she said.

“I’m proud of my role as Academics Chair for Delta Zeta — lifting up my sisters to achieve academic success is one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life — and some of my favorite memories have been going to semi-formals, Gong Show and hanging out with my little.”

Mokry also shared a powerful piece of advice for her fellow students, which she said was the biggest lesson she learned as a UH student: “Put yourself out there, and be bold. Stepping out of your comfort zone is the best way to gain skills, create memories and have meaningful experiences in your life.”

The Cullen College of Engineering’s Fall 2025 Commencement Ceremony will take place at 9:00 AM on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at the Fertitta Center. Tickets are required for guests aged three years and older; speak with your graduating student for more information.
