How it Works: UH engineering student explains how a car engine works in new video series

Starting a car is as easy as turning a key, but have you ever wondered what really happens under the hood?

In the video series “How it Works,” Cullen College mechanical engineering student Adrian Venegas explains the basics of how a car engine works.

Venegas, who also serves as president of the UH Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE), is what many would call an expert on the topic. Together with his fellow FSAE members, Venegas built a formula-One style race car from the ground up to compete in the annual Formula SAE competition, where prototype cars made by college students from around the country are judged.

Venegas explains how a car’s four stroke process helps the car generate power. The gasoline, pistons and spark plugs are also involved to help pump the air through the engine – the more air you pump, the more power you make.

The UH FSAE team is composed of students from various backgrounds and disciplines including mechanical, electrical and civil engineering, as well as architecture, industrial design and computer science.
