PHOTOS: 2015 Civil & Environmental Engineering Gala & Induction Ceremony

The Academy of Distinguished Civil and Environmental Engineers (Academy) held its annual Gala and Induction Ceremony on September 10th at the Hess Club. The Academy is dedicated to recognizing outstanding alumni who bring honor to the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) department at the University of Houston and have sustained distinguished contributions to the profession, field, university, or society at large.

Joseph W. Tedesco, dean of the Cullen College of Engineering, provided opening remarks for the evening. Other speakers included Roberto Ballarini, Thomas and Laura Hsu Professor and civil and environmental chair, and alumnus Joe Zimmerman, P.E. In addition to inducting two distinguished alumni members into the Academy, student scholarships and faculty and staff awards were also presented during the event.

Houston civil engineer and UH Cullen College of Engineering alumnus D. Wayne Klotz (MSCE ’76) was named the keynote speaker for the college’s fall 2019 commencement on Friday, December 13. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University in 1974 and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the Cullen College in 1976.

A Collaboration of Satellites and Villages: UH Professor Continues Work With NASA and Mekong River Stakeholders To Address Flooding and Other Critical Issues

Hyongki Lee, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, is working on his second NASA SERVIR project.

Hyongki Lee, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, has a lot of experience using data collected by Earth-observing technologies (such as satellites)  for solving water management issues on Earth. 

With his latest grant, Lee is diving deeper into addressing critical concerns such as land subsidence, flood forecasting and groundwater management in the Mekong region of Southeast Asia.
