A multitude of everyday products – ranging from cosmetics and shampoo to computers and furniture – are made of composite materials. Composites are made by combining two or more natural or artificial elements, with the result being significantly different and often stronger than the original materials. Intrigued by the potential and properties of composites, Ali Slim chose to pursue a Ph.D.

President Trump’s budget for the next fiscal year proposes a number of cuts, including defunding the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (USCSB). The non-partisan, independent body assesses chemical accidents — such as the West Fertilizer Co. explosion in 2013 and the Arkema plant explosion after Hurricane Harvey in 2017 — and recommends better practices for the industry.

The Research Experience For Undergrads Inspires Students

Vivek Yadav, studying for his Ph.D. in chemical engineering at the Cullen College, earned third place for his presentation at the "Excellence in Graduate Polymer Research" session at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) 2016 Annual Meeting held in San Francisco. AIChE is the world's leading organization for chemical engineers with more than 50,000 members from over 100 countries.

Chemical Engineering Professor Researches New Materials for 3-D Printing

The latest developments in three-dimensional printing technology are opening doors to advances in research fields like medicine, computing and electronics. But while these advances are promising, the feedstocks used in 3-d printing are still mostly limited to simple polymers, which are great for constructing trinkets and demo devices but not as useful when looking to create complex circuit boards or flexible, bendable wiring.

Shih, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering with the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering, has won two grants in recent weeks: one to develop an environmental monitoring system for space missions, the other to devise an oil leak detection tool for unmanned offshore rigs.
