UH Engineering to Offer Data Analytics Certificate for Energy Industry

Stabilizing oil prices have prompted producers to return to both shale and offshore projects, but the industry still needs to cut costs.

A new workforce program offered by the University of Houston Cullen College of engineering focuses on helping oil and gas producers more efficiently use and maintain equipment by making better use of the terabytes of data streaming from monitoring sensors built into equipment. It will launch in fall 2017.

Generous Engineering Alumnus William A. Brookshire Funds $1M Scholarship for Teachers

Great teachers are in line for great things, thanks to generous alumnus

In his continued spirit of generosity, UH Engineering alumnus William A. Brookshire has donated $1 million to the Cullen College of Engineering to create the William A. Brookshire Teaching Excellence Award Endowment. According to the endowment agreement, the annual distributed income will honor faculty members in the Cullen College “who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to exemplifying the highest levels of teaching excellence inside the classroom.”

Computer simulation software allows engineers to predict how certain materials will perform under specific – and often extreme – conditions. For instance, major advances in aerospace and flight were made possible due to engineering simulation based on computational solid mechanics, leading to pioneering work conducted by the company Boeing.

Subsea Engineering Students Tour Cameron’s R&D Laboratory

Subsea engineering students enrolled in the “Design of Subsea Blowout Preventers” course at the UH Cullen College of Engineering took part in a once-in-a-lifetime field trip to tour the research and development (R&D) laboratories at the energy giant Cameron, a leading provider of flow equipment products, systems and services to the worldwide energy industry.

More Texas Teens Want to be Engineers When They Grow Up

A whopping 13 percent of Texas teens who took the 2015 SAT test indicated that they intended to study engineering in college. Engineering was listed as the second-most popular career choice for Texas teens -- 22 percent of students who reported their future plans indicated they were interested in healthcare professions. 

Industry Veteran Named Director for Subsea Systems Institute

Bill Maddock has been named director of the Subsea Systems Institute, a national research center established in Houston to develop the transformative technologies, engineering and operational practices to safely and sustainably produce deepwater offshore energy resources. Maddock is an experienced marine and offshore engineer with expertise in offshore structures, marine operations and the ice sciences.

Cullen College Welcomes Nine Engineering Professors

A combination of nine university professors and industry professionals is joining the Cullen College of Engineering faculty at the University of Houston this semester. The majority are biomedical engineers with expertise ranging from brain-machine interfaces for control of prosthetic limbs to cell membrane research for diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer.
