Engineering Undergraduate Admissions Requirements

For admission rules and requirements applicable to all University of Houston applicants visit UH Admissions.

Admission standards for the Cullen College of Engineering are higher than the general admissions criteria for UH. The tables below show the College of Engineering’s admission criteria for high school graduates and transfer students. Current UH students who want to change their majors to engineering must meet the transfer student admissions criteria. 

 

Cullen College of Engineering Freshman Admission Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria.

Mathematics (including two units/credits in algebra, one in geometry, and one-half in either elementary analysis or analytical geometry) 4
Mechanical Engineering Majors Only:  Course in mechanical drawing/drafting in the tenth, eleventh or twelfth grade.  A deficiency in this area may be made up during the first year at the University of Houston.  

 

Transfer Students & Major Changes for Current Students

To better accommodate the diversity of academic backgrounds of transfer student applicants, the Cullen College of Engineering has adopted a total holistic admission review process. This policy applies to all applicants to engineering including those that satisfy transfer admission standards which are as follows.

To following courses (can include AP credit) are preferred but not required to be admitted:

  • Calculus I
  • Calculus II
  • General Chemistry I
  • “Calculus-based” Physics I

In the calculation of each GPA, all attempts taken at any institution count — even if a course was repeated.

 

Readmission

Students seeking readmission from University Academic Suspension or returning to the University of Houston after an interruption of at least four terms or 13 consecutive months into the Cullen College of Engineering must follow the readmissions procedure by the deadline date as outlined: https://www.uh.edu/admissions/apply/re-apply-former-student/

New Student Conferences

All new freshman and transfer students admitted to the University of Houston are required to attend an orientation conference. For more information see the University’s New Student Conferences webpage.

 

Credit by Exam

The University of Houston and Cullen College of Engineering accept credit through various examination programs, including the Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Subject Tests.
