UH Researchers Forge Ahead With Low-Cost, High-Efficiency Solar Cell Device Development

Researchers have developed a better quality, high-efficiency gallium arsenide solar cells on low-cost metal foil.

An article citing improvements in research involving a new generation of flexible photovoltaic devices reported by the Selva Research Group at the UH Cullen College of Engineering was recently published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science. The article is titled “Flexible GaAs Solar cells on roll-to-roll processed epitaxial Ge films on metal foils: a route towards low-cost and high-performance III-V photovoltaics.”

New Monitoring Tool Would Be Able To Detect Imperfections Almost Instantaneously

Researchers from the University of Houston are developing a new quality control tool for continuous nanomanufacturing, a key step in moving nanodevices from the lab to the real world.

“Nanomanufacturing sounds great, but it really has to be scalable,” said Venkat Selvamanickam, MD Anderson Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering. “You have to be able to control the quality.”

Doctoral candidate Sara Pouladi won the Best Poster Award for her work on thin film solar cells at the 44th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference in Washington D.C.

Titled “Flexible GaAs single-junction solar cells based on single-crystal-like thin-film materials directly grown on metal tapes," the work offers that III-V compound semiconductor materials are the top candidates for thin-film photovoltaics.

UH Materials Research Society Student Chapter Hosts Campus Symposium

The University of Houston-Materials Research Society Chapter (UH-MRS) hosted its first student symposium in the main lobby of engineering building 1. At the symposium students presented their work to an esteemed crowd of professional members across various engineering and science disciplines at UH. The 40 presenters came from different departments including chemistry, physics; and chemical, mechanical, materials and electrical engineering.

UH Launches Plans for Superconductor Manufacturing Institute

The University of Houston will lead plans for an Advanced Superconductor Manufacturing Institute (ASMI), aimed at speeding the full commercialization of high-temperature superconductors. Energetics Inc. will support UH in this effort.
