Taking The Reins of Power (Over Power) Wins Best Paper Award for Cullen College Team

Powering up: Saeedeh Abbasi (center) works to restore power with the help Gino Lim and Masoud Barati

Whether you’ve suffered through a major Houston hurricane, flood event or momentary glitch in the power grid, no doubt you understand the severity of a power blackout. And lest you think Houston has cornered the market on such catastrophes, think back to 2003 when the biggest blackout in U.S. history left 50 million people in darkness in the northeast corner of America stretching into Canada.

Eyes in the Sky: Gino Lim is Watching Your Drones

Gino Lim looks skyward, mapping routes for drones

In Gino Lim’s estimation, drones will soon take over the sky, delivering medical kits and medicines to rural patients, relaying sensitive military information to troops and, yes, one day picking him up at his Pearland home and delivering him to his office at UH. In fact, the future as he sees it, is something he could drone on about for hours.

Cullen College’s Chair of Industrial Engineering Is Quite a Fellow

Gino Lim is named a new IISE Fellow

If you’ve ever evacuated your home in the Houston area because of a threatening flood or hurricane, you’ve felt the impact of Gino Lim’s work. If you or someone you know has ever been treated with radiation for cancer therapy, you’ve also felt the impact of Gino Lim’s work.

Houston Public Media Interviews IE Department Chair Developing Floodwater Sensors

The city of Houston is implementing a new measure to protect drivers from flash flooding on roads. Crews from the city’s Street and Drainage Division are nearly done installing Houston’s first ever electronic gates at the flood-prone underpass on Houston Avenue at Memorial Drive. The city plans to install gates at a total of 27 underpasses as the project unfolds.

Industrial Engineering Offers New Joint IE/MBA Program for Graduate Students

Lim spoke about the new IE/MBA program at the spring IE Awards Banquet.

The beauty of an industrial engineering degree lies in its versatility. Industrial engineers are taught to determine the most effective ways for an organization to use the basic factors of production – people, machines, materials, information and energy – in order to make a product or produce a service.

Ph.D. Works to Optimize Radiation Treatment

Laleh Kardar

If you lie down on the couch and put your hand over your heart, you’ll feel your chest rise and fall with each breath. It seems trivial, but the movement of lungs expanding and contracting can drastically change radiation treatment options for patients with lung cancer.

Tedesco

Continuing its commitment to education at the University of Houston, ConocoPhillips is donating $1 million to UH’s growing Energy Research Park (ERP) and $125,000 to various engineering, science and business programs.

Lim Named New Chair of Industrial Engineering

Lim

The UH Cullen College of Engineering has named Gino Lim the new chair of its Department of Industrial Engineering, effective May 16. Lim takes over the role from Fritz Claydon, the college’s associate dean for administration and research, who led the department on an interim basis beginning in the summer of 2010.

Researchers' tool to help Houston first responders avoid flood waters

A computer-based system being developed by researchers at the University of Houston is expected to help the city’s emergency responders better navigate roads during times of flooding.
