In a distinguished achievement highlighting the University of Houston’s growing influence in scientific leadership, the Cullen College of Engineering announces that Maria Burns, Ph.D., has been elected President of the Texas Academy of Science (TAS), one of the state’s most venerable scientific institutions.
Burns is an assistant professor in the Information Science Technology Department of the Cullen College of Engineering’s Technology Division. She is also the coordinator of the Technology Leadership and Innovation Management Program and Training Manager of the Leadership, Budgeting, and Finance Program.
Burns’ election to this esteemed position follows her prior years of service to the organization, as Vice President and President-Elect. Founded in 1880, the Texas Academy of Science stands as one of the oldest and most prestigious scientific organizations in the Southwest. The Academy plays a pivotal role in shaping scientific discourse, research priorities, and educational initiatives across Texas, bringing together the state’s foremost scientists, researchers, educators and students across multiple disciplines.
“This appointment represents the culmination of years of dedicated work and reflects the growing recognition of the University of Houston’s contributions to scientific advancement,” Burns said. “This role will further cement our University’s standing as a driving force in scientific innovation across Texas and beyond.”
As President, Burns will represent Texas’ scientific community in various academic forums. Her appointment is expected to enhance UH’s visibility in scientific circles statewide and nationwide. Her presidency begins at a critical time when scientific leadership is increasingly vital to addressing complex challenges, such as STEM innovation, and leadership in the era of AI.
