Engineering Alumni Association Hosts EWeek Reception

The University of Houston Engineering Alumni Association (EAA) hosted the 2012 Engineers Week Reception and Program on Tuesday, February 21 at the University of Houston Hilton, in celebration of National Engineers Week.

Over 200 engineering students, alumni, faculty, staff, and sponsors attended the event, now in its eighth year.

"Our event was specifically created to benefit just UH engineering students and organizations," said Cynthia Oliver Coleman (BSChE ’71), founder and chair of the event. "The primary goal each year is to enable the many UH engineering students and organizations to receive cash awards and lots of recognition during National Engineers Week."

Approximately $44,000 was generously donated by engineering companies, professional organizations and alumni to 55 high-achieving Cullen College students in recognition of their excellence in academics and leadership. This brings the 8-year total of cash awards to approximately $210,000, provided to 307 UH engineering students and 23 UH engineering student organizations.

The EWeek Engineering Challenge grand prize of $1,280 was awarded to the UH American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The challenge commenced several months prior to the reception and program, and called for alumni to make monetary donations to the student organization of their choice.

Additionally, the UH Society of Women Engineers (SWE) won the Engineering Community Outreach grand prize for conducting the most effective engineering-related outreach to local schools or non-profit organizations. UH SWE received $2,000 and an on-site tour and career information session at FMC Technologies, the sponsor of the competition. The runner-up prize of $1,008 was awarded to UH Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).
