Stuart Long, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Cullen College of Engineering, has been named a life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, effective January 1, 2011.

Life fellow status is conferred upon IEEE fellows the year following their 65th birthday. Long became an IEEE fellow in 1991, a designation given to those with “an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest.” Many of Long’s scientific achievements center around electromagnetics and the development of antennas now used in military and wireless communication applications.

This is just the latest accolade Long has received in the last few years. This past summer the University of Houston awarded him its highest faculty honor, the Esther Farfel Award, which in given in recognition of career-long excellence in scholarship, teaching and overall service to the university. In 2009 he was the inaugural recipient of the university’s Career Teaching Award, while in 2006 he was presented with the Cullen College’s highest recognition, the Fluor Daniel Award.

In addition to serving as a professor in the ECE department, Long is also UH’s interim vice chancellor/vice president for research and technology transfer as well as associate dean of undergraduate research and The Honors College.
