Current and former University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering students were among those named by area professional organizations recently as their 2009 Young Engineers of the Year.

The three UH individuals, among 16 chosen, were recognized with the honor as part of National Engineers Week (Feb. 15-21). Dedicated to recognizing engineers’ ingenuity, professional and educational organizations collaborate throughout the week to raise awareness about engineering’s benefit to society and promote education in math, science and technology.

The Houston Engineers Week Committee will honor Kristin White (2007 MCE), Krishna P. Jonnalagadda (2003 MSEnvE), David Bass and the other 13 recipients of the award at a recognition dinner Feb. 16 at the Omni Houston Hotel.

Just two years out of the Cullen College’s civil engineering graduate program, White is a project manager for Dodson & Associates where she works on water resources engineering and analysis projects. The assistant secretary for The Society of Military Engineers (SAME), White is an LEED accredited professional, a certified floodplain manager and licensed Texas professional engineer. The Houston-Galveston Post of the organization named her their 2009 Young Engineer of the Year.

Her fellow alumnus, Krishna P. Jonnalagadda also was honored with the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) 2009 Young Engineer of the Year award. An active member of TSPE, Jonnalagadda serves as the secretary and communicatio ns chair for the Greater Houston chapter of the organization. For the last three years, he has served on the Houston Engineers Week Committee and currently serves as vice chair for the Engineer of the Year banquet and chair for the Web site committee. A licensed professional engineer, Jonnalagadda works as a senior project professional with Fugro Consultants Inc. onshore geotechnics group

The only person on the list still working to complete his degree, David Bass plans to graduate from UH in spring 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He was named the 2009 Young Engineer of the Year by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Bass is currently president of organization’s UH chapter, a student intern for ASME IPTI and secretary of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society.
