A team comprised of four members from the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering took first place in the university’s 19th Annual Department Challenge Golf Tournament, which was held this year on May 16th at the Wildcat Golf Club in Houston. The win marks the first time a team from the college captured the trophy.

There was plenty of competition against the engineering team, with over twenty-two different teams competing for first place.

Members on the winning engineering team included John Costales, a technician in the Department of Chemical Engineering, his son Daniel Costales, who works in the UH Diesel Vehicle Research and Testing Facility, and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Professors Jeff Williams and Stuart Long, who is also the associate dean for education development and outreach.

Long has played in the tournament for the past eight or nine years and was on the runner-up team in both 2001 and 2003. “Jeff Williams and I have played several times together. Dean [Larry] Witte usually plays with us, but he couldn’t this year,” said Long.

Since Witte was unable to participate this year Long and Williams teamed up with the father and son duo. According to Long, “this was the first time playing with this particular foursome.”

The combination worked. The team took first place with a nine under par score of 63. “I was surprised we won. We played really well and we were lucky,” Long said about their victory.

For their hard work each team member received a trophy, t-shirt and cap, and golf rounds for four on the course worth $280 each.
