UH Engineering Professor Elected to IEEE Board of Directors

University of Houston Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Stuart Long has been named Director-Elect of Division IV of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, or IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional society.

The IEEE is a non-profit, technical professional association of more than 380,000 individual members in 150 countries. Through its members, the IEEE is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace, computers and telecommunications to biomedicine, electric power and consumer electronics.

The organization has ten division directors, each representing a subset of the broad technical areas encompassed by the IEEE. Long, associate dean for educational activities at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, will serve as director for Division IV, Electromagnetics and Radiation, and will represent the following societies:

  • Antennas and Propagation Society
  • Broadcast Technology Society
  • C onsumer Electronics Society
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility Society
  • Magnetics Society
  • Microwave Theory and Techniques Society
  • Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society
  • Superconductivity Council

Previously Dr. Long has served as a member of the IEEE Publications Board, the Technical Activities Board, and the Editorial Board for the IEEE Spectrum magazine. He was President of the Antennas and Propagation Society in 1996 and is currently Vice Chair of the IEEE Fellows Committee. After serving as Director-Elect during 2004, he will serve a two-year term on the Board of Directors for 2005-2006.
