The UH Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is searching for 15 highly talented undergraduate college students to participate in its nationally funded research experience program this summer.

Participating students will get a first-hand look at what it's like to conduct major research in electrical engineering at the University of Houston, thanks to the continuation of grant from the National Science Foundation.

The students are part of the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, a fellowship project intended to increase the number, quality and diversity of students entering basic research careers in science. Program administrators hope to infuse qualified undergraduates with enthusiasm toward both graduate level education and a career in research.

The 10-week program provides students with hands-on experience in cutting edge research areas of computer engineering, control systems, applied electromagnetics, power systems, solid-state materials, signal processing, intelligent systems, and biomedical engineering. Each student will work on an assigned project under the direct supervision of a faculty member with expertise in his or her respective research area

During this program, students will acquire competence in:

  • defining a research problem
  • modern methods associated with a literature search
  • designing experiments
  • data acquisition and analysis
  • report and presentation preparation and
  • proposal writing through a formal, three credit-hour research course in ECE.

Applications will be reviewed on a first-come-first-served basis. The final deadline for receipt of applications is April 1, 2003. Each application will be acknowledged, and all applicants will be notified of their status on or before April 8, 2003.

Participating students are provided with up to a $3,800 stipend, room and board on campus and assistance with travel expenses.
