UH Robotics Team Places Third in IEEE Competition

A robotics team from the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering claimed third place at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Region 5 Student Robotics Competition on April 20 at the NASA Hilton.

UH team members were Melvin Abraham, Robert Fisher, Christy Varghese, Sanjay Shenoy and Wilson Mathew. A second UH team also competed in the event. Both UH teams advanced to the IEEE competition by winning a run-off race held earlier this month in the Cullen College of Engineering.

"They worked very hard for two semesters and made UH look good at the competition," said electrical engineering professor John Glover, the teams' supervisor.

The objective of the contest was to see how fast the robots could race through the maze. The robots would first "map" the maze, and then "race" the maze with the route it learned while mapping. No remote control devices were allowed.

The second UH competing team had to withdraw during the first round of mapping and racing due to a mechanical problem.

A total of 26 teams competed from schools throughout the Region 5 area.
