The University of Houston Engineering Alumni Association (EAA) gathered Friday, June 1 to recognize alumni, faculty and friends of the Cullen College of Engineering for significant contributions to society and the profession.

The Honorable Mayor Lee Brown was this year's keynote speaker at the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Awards Dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in Downtown Houston. Honorees included:

Charles Beyer is the recipient of one of two Distinguished Engineering Alumni Awards. His career includes positions at Bridge Engineering Corp, Mischer Paving Company, City Pavers Company and Beyer Schindewolf Construction, Inc. He is currently the head of Beyer Construction, one of the founding sponsors of the UH Cullen College of Engineering's Industrial Scholar Interns Program. Beyer has been an active member of the Association of General Contractors, Houston Contractors Association, and Houston Engineering and Scientific Society (HESS), where he currently serves as president.

Ravi Singhania was also presented with a Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award. He has held a variety of manufacturing, engineering, environmental, research, maintenance, and site services positions at BASF since 1968. Singhania is currently the vice president and general manager of a BASF Corporation integrated manufacturing sites in Freeport, Texas. A resident of Lake Jackson, Singhania serves on numerous councils, committees and boards in the Brazosport community.

David Higgins received the EAA Distinguished Young Alumnus Award (40 years old and younger). Higgins has worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, Brown & Root, Bechtel, and Kvaerner. He is currently employed at Burk-Kleinpeter as a structural specialist. He has been a professional member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for fourteen years and has served as an officer in the ASCE and Chi Epsilon, the civil engineering national honor society.

Michael Lacy was awarded the Roger Eichhorn Leadership Service Award for his to the College of Engineering. Lacy began his association with the EAA in 1990 and is a past president of the group, serving on numerous committees and is. He is also vice president of education for American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Lacy is vice president of municipal engineering at Cobourn, Linseisen & Ratcliff, Inc.

Dave Shattuck, associate professor of Electrical Engineering, received the Abraham E. Dukler Distinguished Engineering Faculty Award for career accomplishments, teaching and service. Shattuck joined UH in 1982. His research work involves medical ultrasonic and oil field applications, and he has taught courses in electronics, circuit analysis, microprocessors and communication theory.
