Houston is the Energy Capital of the World, and the Cullen College of Engineering capitalizes on this proximity by offering a range of programs and conducting research into all forms of energy generation. While the Top 10 petroleum engineering program is obviously at the forefront, work on energy production and enhancement is being done directly or indirectly by every department at Cullen.

In addition to energy generation, researchers are at the forefront of energy storage, given its importance to the development of the automobile and alternative energy industries. Multiple Cullen professors are leading teams that expand the capabilities of current battery technology, and that use materials beyond rare earth minerals.
