Researchers at Cullen have published a groundbreaking study in Nature, revealing how international air travel impacted the global spread of COVID-19. Hien Van Nguyen, associate professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, leads the team with graduate students Akash Awasthi and Syed Rizvi. Using an advanced AI tool, the team identified infection hotspots linked to air traffic, highlighting key regions that play a significant role in disease transmission.

The Cullen College of Engineering has been awarded two new grants worth more than $3 million from the National Science Foundation to expand access to STEM education. Under the leadership of Jerrod A. Henderson, assistant professor in the William A. Brookshire Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, these initiatives will work to remove barriers for low-income and underrepresented students, and to foster a more diverse, inclusive, and supportive environment in STEM fields.

Honored for his innovative engineering programs in non-traditional settings, Henderson has shown a deep commitment to making engineering accessible to anyone with a passion for the field.

Ph.D. candidate Md Murad Hossain Khondaker and Mostafa Momen, assistant professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, have co-authored a groundbreaking study that significantly enhances predictions of hurricane intensity and flooding. Their model has improved hurricane intensity forecasts by up to 40 percent and flood predictions by 34 percent, providing essential insights to help better protect vulnerable communities from extreme weather impacts.

Their findings, now published in the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, provide critical insights for improving disaster response strategies.

A team of graduate students from the Cullen College’s Mechanical Engineering Department are working on an innovative capstone project that aims to implement a safety-enhancing device for rupture disks, which are crucial in protecting industrial piping and tubing from overpressure and vacuum conditions.

Nafiseh Amiri, a Cullen College ECE doctoral student, had the opportunity to present her research in Hawaii thanks to a travel grant from the ECS. Amiri’s research focuses on developing thin-film coatings to serve as hydrogen permeation barriers (HPBs) for repurposing natural gas pipeline networks for hydrogen transport and storage.
