Dr. Hanadi Rifai, John and Rebecca Moores Professor and Associate Dean of Research and Facilities at the Cullen College, is leading a trio of UH researchers who have developed a planning tool to identify vulnerable populations to COVID-19.

Dr. Pradeep Sharma, M.D. Anderson Chair Professor of mechanical engineering and chairman of the department, received a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for studying the link between the physics of hearing and the ability to interpret music.

Two faculty members from UH Engineering have been recognized as recipients of the University of Houston's Awards for Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity for the 2019-20 academic year. Dr. Debora F. Rodrigues, of civil & environmental engineering, was recognized in the associate professor category. Dr. Jeremy Palmer, of chemical & biomolecular engineering, was recognized in the assistant professor category. |

Dr. David Mayerich, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, has received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation to develop a software platform to produce searchable digital atlases of whole organs at the cellular level.

Dr. Olga Bannova, director of the Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture at UH, has been named the winner of the 2019 Outstanding Technical Contribution Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Dr. Harish Krishnamoorthy, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, is leading a $2.5 million effort to develop compact electronic power systems.

Dr. Kirill Larin, a professor of biomedical engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, and a team of researchers received a $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to acquire evidence to guide studies on SAC birth outcomes, and to assess the effectiveness of new pharmacological interventions targeted to cannabinoid receptors to prevent or reverse effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE).

Dr. Craig Glennie, principle investigator with NCALM and UH associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, along with a team of researchers will use a $1.89 million grant from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to determine how to reconcile images collected by drone with more precise images, allowing them to better understand how terrain has changed over time.

Dr. Sergey Shevkoplyas, a UH biomedical engineering professor, is using a $1.6 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, to adapt microfluidic technology to enable leukapheresis in babies.
|
Shevkoplyas also recently received funding from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas to revolutionize the first step in a patient’s individualized cell-based treatment: the harvesting of T-cells from the patient’s blood.

Dr. Hyongki Lee, an associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Cullen College of Engineering, has been awarded a $93,000 grant from the K-Water Institute of South Korea to study flood monitoring and management, via the development of algorithms for satellite data.

Dr. Stacey Louie, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, has received a $12,000 grant to study how contaminants interact with water.

Dr. Chandra Mohan, UH Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen Endowed Professor of biomedical engineering, has found race-specific lupus nephritis biomarkers moving science closer to finding treatment.

Dr. Pushpesh Sharma, a May 2019 graduate from the University of Houston's chemical engineering and petroleum engineering programs, has earned distinction for his work as a doctoral student and with the start-up Inveniam Asset Management by being named one of The Way Ahead's 2020 Energy Influencers.
