Dr. Hanadi Rifai, John and Rebecca Moores Professor and Associate Dean of Research and Facilities at the Cullen College, is leading a trio of UH researchers who have developed a planning tool to identify vulnerable populations to COVID-19.

Modeling The COVID-19 Pandemic

Dr. Rose T. Faghih, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering and the director of the Computational Medicine Laboratory, is overseeing a group of UH graduate students who are creating videos to share on YouTube focused on modeling the spread of COVID-19 among different populations.

Dr. Kirill Larin, a professor of biomedical engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, and a team of researchers received a $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to acquire evidence to guide studies on SAC birth outcomes, and to assess the effectiveness of new pharmacological interventions targeted to cannabinoid receptors to prevent or reverse effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE).

Dr. Craig Glennie, principle investigator with NCALM and UH associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, along with a team of researchers will use a $1.89 million grant from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to determine how to reconcile images collected by drone with more precise images, allowing them to better understand how terrain has changed over time.

Dr. Sergey Shevkoplyas, a UH biomedical engineering professor, is using a $1.6 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, to adapt microfluidic technology to enable leukapheresis in babies.

Shevkoplyas also recently received funding from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas to revolutionize the first step in a patient’s individualized cell-based treatment: the harvesting of T-cells from the patient’s blood.
