The Cullen College has received a $3 million grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas to establish the state’s first Cancer Immunotherapy Biomarker Core. Led by Chandra Mohan and co-led by Weiyi Peng. This new facility will enhance Texas’s research capabilities, foster collaboration, and support breakthroughs in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

For the first time in history, a UH professor is leading the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology (TAMEST). Ganesh Thakur began his term as TAMEST president in February. In this role, Thakur aims to elevate UH’s national presence and foster collaboration among top researchers across Texas. He will oversee TAMEST’s operations and annual conference, with the 2026 event in San Antonio set to focus on climate change.

UH has received a $2.8 million grant to revolutionize power systems in military drones. Led by Professors Kaushik Rajashekara and Hao Huang, the project aims to deliver a lighter, more efficient and cost-effective solution—reducing fuel consumption and emissions while enhancing drone performance.

Hien Van Nguyen has developed MedGaze, an AI system that enhances hospital efficiency and diagnostic precision by learning from thousands of recorded eye-tracking sessions of radiologists interpreting X-rays.

Consuelo Waight of UH’s Cullen College Technology Division has received a Fulbright Specialist Award. She will collaborate with Instituto Superior de Gestão in Portugal on a project focused on human resource development and social work, fostering international knowledge exchange and partnerships.

A team of MAE students from the Cullen College—David Whaley, Cory Crow, Ashton West, and Charity Golleher—are making strides with their capstone project. As Team H.O.R.I.Z.O.N.S., they’re designing, fabricating and testing a dynamic adapter for a NASA device in development at Marshall Space Flight Center.
