Dr. Katerina Kourentzi, Research Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, is developing a saliva-based lateral flow assay rapid test for COVID-19 detection. The test strips for the assay are fabricated using the Biodot XYZ3060 Dispensing Platform. Liquid biopsy samples are absorbed by an Oasis Diagnostics Pure-SAL kit.

A partnership between researchers at the University of Virginia and the University of Houston has received $2 million in funding from the National Science Foundation for their Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI) proposal. Lars C. Grabow, Dan Luss Professor in the William A. Brookshire Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Cullen College of Engineering, is a co-PI on the project and will lead a team of researchers at the University of Houston. He identified Michael P. Harold and Praveen Bollini, also of the William A. Brookshire Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, as two colleagues that will be taking part in the research with him.

University of Houston researchers have found that during early pregnancy, the mix of alcohol and nicotine significantly alters the gene regulatory pathways of the developing fetus, which can lead to major deficiencies in brain development. Metin Akay, founding chair and John S. Dunn Endowed Chair Professor of biomedical engineering is reporting the findings, the first study of its kind, in the Nature journal Scientific Reports.

Kirill Larin, professor of biomedical engineering, has received $3 million from the National Eye Institute to create a new technology that will measure the stiffness of the lens in the eye, which is likely associated with presbyopia, or farsightedness, the inevitable and age-related loss of the ability to focus on nearby objects.

The paper, “Temozolomide in Combination With NF-κB Inhibitor Significantly Disrupts the Glioblastoma Multiforme Spheroid Formation,” from the Akay Lab biomedical research team is the IEEE’s second most popular paper in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library as of mid-September.
