The Cullen College of Engineering’s annual G.R.A.D.E. Camp caught the eye of local ABC news affiliate KTRK this summer, and they recently ran a feature on the engineering camp on their nightly newscast.

G.R.A.D.E. Camp (which stands for ‘Girls Reaching And Demonstrating Excellence’) is held every summer at the college for area girls entering the 8th through 12th grade in the fall. Campers are introduced to basic engineering concepts like robotics and electronics through hands-on experiments and team building exercises. The culmination of their experience is building a robot that follows a track through a maze, which they display on the last day of camp to an audience of family and friends.

KTRK reporter Elissa Rivas visited the camp during its second week to watch campers assemble their robots and talk to them about what it means to have these types of opportunities as young girls.

Moyinoluwa Oyebanji, an 11th grade student at the Tenney School, said, "This actually makes a huge difference. Now that I'm sure that I want to do engineering, it narrows down the schools I'm going to go to."
