Master of Civil Engineering

Objective

The main objective of the M.C.E. degree program is to equip the student with the extensive background required for present day professional civil engineering practice in industry. The study program is intended to provide the student with more depth and breadth in chosen fields of Civil Engineering and related subjects than is possible within the B.S.C.E. degree program. The curriculum is design, construction, management, and operation oriented to enable a graduate of the program to cope with and solve current and future Civil Engineering problems. The M.C.E. degree is viewed as one which will not normally lead to entry in a Ph.D. program. It is not research oriented, as is the M.S.C.E. degree program. M.C.E. students are not eligible for financial aid in the form of teaching and/or research assistantship.

The degree program can be completed in 1 to 1.5 years of full time study or 2 to 3 years of part time study. Courses are available in late afternoon and evening to accommodate the working professionals.

Advising and Planning

• At his/her registration, the student must contact the Civil Engineering Director of Graduate Studies who will assign the Advisor.
• Prior to completion of his/her first semester, the student and his/her advisor will submit to the Director of Graduate Studies the student's Preliminary Degree Plan. The degree plan will list the specific courses, which must be completed to obtain the degree. Changes in this plan, if required, will be approved in writing by the advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies. Only those studies undertaken in accordance with this approved degree plan shall be credited towards the M.C.E. degree.
• Prior to or at the beginning of his/her last semester of registration, the student and his/her advisor must submit to the Director of Graduate Studies the final degree plan to be certified for graduation. The final degree plan must be submitted no later than the first week of classes of the student's last semester. The student must also apply for graduation to the University's Office of Graduation at the beginning of his/her last semester, in accordance with university requirements.
• A student must complete his/her M.C.E. program within 5 years from the semester of first enrollment.
• Failure to comply with these regulations will result in preventing the student from further registration. The responsibility that the study program be carried out as approved and meet all Department and University requirements shall rest with the student.

Degree Requirements

The M.C.E. degree consists of 30 semester credit hours approved by the advisor and the department as follows:

• 9 to 21 hours of required courses according to the student's degree plan.
• 9 to 21 hours of electives according to the student's degree plan.
• The courses must be in accordance with an appropriate degree plan, approved by student's Advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies.
• No course in which a student receives a grade less than C may be used to satisfy program requirements, but it will be counted within the GPA.
• A course cannot be attempted more than three times; a grade of "W" is considered an attempt.
• No more than 6 hours of graduate credit may be transferred from another institution. Also, a maximum of 6 hours of P.B. credit with a grade of at least a B may be changed to graduate credit. Transferred courses must have a grade of B or better.
• A minimum GPA of 3.0 for all courses attempted during the M.C.E. degree program must be achieved by the student in order to graduate.
• A grade of C+ or less earned in four courses attempted during the M.C.E. degree program will result in dropping of the student from the graduate program.
