UH Engineering Alumni Association Engineers Week 2009

2009 Engineers Week Overview

On Tuesday, February 17, the UH Engineering Alumni Association hosted the 5th annual Engineers Week Reception & Program where nearly $28,000 in awards was presented to UH engineering students and organizations to make the five year total of $96,000 awarded to 170 students and 12 organizations.

The event was held at the UH Hilton Hotel on the Tuesday of National Engineers Week to support future engineers (UH engineering students) and celebrate how engineers make a difference in our world.  This was a great Year 5 celebration.  Nearly $28,000 in awards was presented to 43 students and 2 student organizations at the reception & program that was attended by about 190 engineering alumni, students, sponsors, faculty, and staff.  The 17 sponsors were UH Petroleum Engineering Advisory Board, UH Engineering Alumni Association, FMC Technologies, Cameron, ExxonMobil Women Engineer UH Alumni, Shell Oil Company, Bechtel, Fluor Corporation, Bayer Technology Services, INTECSEA, NOV Downhole/Drill Bits & Services, Reliant Energy, AECOM, Baker Hughes, Malcolm Pirnie, Inc., Society of Women Engineers-Houston Area, and Traffic Engineers, Inc.

The “Jeopardy: Engineer Our World” game show (spin-off of “Jeopardy” TV show) was performed by alumni and students.  The Year 5 Celebration included a sincere thank-you from past EWeek student recipients who are now alumni, some Year 5 facts, and a raffle that awarded cash to 5 current UH engineering students. The finale of the “Engineering Community Outreach” competition was performed by FMC Technologies (sponsor), alumni, and student organizations.  The audience participated in the “EWeek Fun & Prizes” game (sponsored by Cameron) that was conducted by a student organization (SWE).

Weeks prior to the reception & program, the UH Engineering Alumni Association hosted an engineering outreach competition for student organizations to participate in and show how engineers make a difference in the community via schools and non-profit organizations.  The following five student organizations participated:  EWB, MAES (1st place winner), NSBE (2nd place winner), PAC, and SHPE.
