UH Announces Plans for New Research and Engineering Building

The University of Houston plans to design and construct a new Multidisciplinary Research and Engineering Building (MREB) that will support the University's mission to provide Tier One research facilities. The proposed building will provide immediate relief for research labs within both the Department of Research and the Cullen College of Engineering. The four-story, 120,000 Gross Square Feet building will house research labs, computational training facilities, visualization lab, high performance computational server room, and a NMR spectrometer lab. UH Leading Global Subsea Engineering Education Alliance

UH Leading Global Subsea Engineering Education Alliance
Leaders with the world's top subsea engineering programs gathered at the University of Houston last week for the first meeting of the Global Subsea University Alliance, a group dedicated to establishing worldwide standards for subsea engineering education. Given the abundance of offshore resources and the need to extract them efficiently and safely, subsea engineering talent is in high demand. The lack of uniform standards surrounding subsea engineering education, though, can throw a wrench in petroleum companies' recruiting and hiring process. The alliance seeks to remedy that problem by establishing a global subsea curriculum in coordination with companies that operate in the sector. Read More

UH Seed Funding Supports New Research in Catalysis, Nanofabrication

Economou Brankovic
Two Cullen College of Engineering faculty members recently won awards from the University of Houston's seed funding program, GEAR or Grants to Enhance and Advance Research, which are awarded by the university's Division of Research. Demetre Economou, Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen Distinguished University Chair of chemical and biomolecular engineering, will use the funds to develop a new technique for mass producing nanotechnology-based devices. Stanko Brankovic, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, will use the funds to develop a new method of fine-tuning the properties of nanoscale catalysts by adjusting their compressive or tensile strain. Professor Helping Develop Alternative Energy Storage Device

Selva
If you don't like the weather, give it a few minutes and it'll change. That bit of homespun wisdom is actually a big problem for the renewable energy industry. The amount of electricity produced by wind and solar power rises and falls with the amount of wind and sunshine. As a result, sometimes these technologies generate more energy than needed, sometimes they produce less. Venkat "Selva" Selvamanickam, M.D. Anderson Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the college, is addressing this problem by collaborating on a grant awarded to Florida-based Tai-Yang Research Company (TYRC). Their research involves the creation of a superconducting magnetic energy storage device that stores energy with 95% "round trip" efficiency and can quickly discharge the energy it holds. ConocoPhillips Donates Over $1 Million to UH

Continuing its commitment to education at the University of Houston, ConocoPhillips is donating $1 million to UH's growing Energy Research Park (ERP) and $125,000 to various engineering, science and business programs. The $1 million gift will support the ConocoPhillips Petroleum Engineering Building, which serves an expanding number of undergraduate and graduate students. ConocoPhillips has now given a total of $3 million to this facility, with previous gifts of $1 million in 2012 and also in 2011. Read More

Revived PE Program Graduates First Undergraduate Students

The first-ever class of students in the Cullen College of Engineering's revived undergraduate petroleum engineering program were awarded bachelor's degrees at the college's commencement ceremony last Saturday. After being discontinued decades ago, the bachelor's degree option in petroleum engineering was re-established in the fall of 2009 to counteract the critical shortage of talent needed to replace the industry's aging workforce.
