Faculty Member Wins $1M Grant to Develop Water Monitoring System

Rodrigues
A University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering assistant professor has won a $1 million grant to develop a water monitoring system that guards against disease- and corrosion-causing bacteria in water systems in real time. The three-year grant was awarded to Debora Rodrigues, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, by the Qatar National Research Fund. The technology being developed is designed to be placed in pipelines that carry water to and from water treatment plants. At its heart is a class of molecules known as aptamers, which can be designed to detect specific bacteria. Read More

UH Chem-E Car Team Places Fifth at National Competition

The University of Houston Chem-E Car team competed at the 2012 AIChE National Competition recently, taking fifth place, the highest that UH has achieved at the national level. Chemical engineering student teams from around the country were challenged to design and construct a size-limited car that is powered by a controlled chemical reaction. The car's performance was evaluated by its ability to travel a specified distance of 21 meters with a load measuring 300 milliliters. Distance and load parameters were given to the teams an hour before the competition. Read More

Paper on Electricity Purchasing Wins Award for ECE's Han

An article authored by a University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering faculty member won the Best Paper Award at the Third IEEE International Conference on Smart Grid Communications, which was held earlier this month in Taiwan. The article by Zhu Han, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, and his Ph.D. student, Yi Huang, presents an algorithm designed to allow electric utilities to quickly select the most reliable and profitable wholesale provider of electricity generated from a renewable source.
