The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) of the Computing Research Association recently highlighted research conducted by Hien Van Nguyen – assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering and director of the Houston Ubiquitous Learning Algorithms (HULA) Research Lab — in its “Great Innovative Ideas” series.

The online series showcases “exciting new research and ideas generated by the computing community.” The CCC’s mission is to catalyze the broad computer research community and encourage innovative, high-impact research.

Nguyen’s research team proposes a more physician-friendly interactive computer-aided diagnostic tool that should encourage higher use and adoption by doctors and improved diagnostic performance. Based on a variant of Neural Turing Machine, and using machine learning, the proposed diagnostic tool can effectively adapt to doctors’ individual diagnostic styles and preferences.
