The Cullen College of Engineering has a longstanding policy on the “Maximum Number of Attempts” that are allowed to successfully complete a course in the undergraduate curriculum.
This policy states that: Students are allowed a maximum of two attempts in an engineering course and students are allowed a maximum of three attempts in a science or mathematics course. Under this policy, the “count” includes all attempts that result in a course grade of "A-F","W" or "I."
More details can be found here.
If a student wishes to petition for an additional attempt at a course that is beyond what is permitted under this policy, the student is required to submit a petition using the form below. Please note that in this process, a student is required to submit a statement as to why an additional attempt is warranted. This statement must be clear and well written. The statement must explain why previous attempts have not been successful and if approved, what will be changed to make sure that the courses will be completed successfully. All related issues, with appropriate levels of detail and information, must be addressed in this statement.
If the request is not submitted or the request denied, you will be dropped from your engineering courses.
Each such request will be reviewed holistically. Submission of this petition does not guarantee approval. Requests are denied/approved on a case by case basis.
Deadline for third/fourth attempt requests for:
- Winter Mini 2024: Wednesday, December 11, 2024
- Spring 2025 Regular Session 1, or Session 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6: Wednesday, January 8, 2025
NOTE:
DO NOT submit the Max Attempt Request Form if you do not intend to take the course(s) that you have a violation in.
If you would like to request a temporary release of the Engineering Hold(s) on your account, please complete the form below.
