College Offering Nation's First and Only Subsea M.S.

The University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering has received approval from the State of Texas to offer the nation's first and only Master's degree program in subsea engineering. The program focuses on the design and operation of subsea systems for oil and gas production in ultra-deepwater environments (defined as 10,000 or more feet below sea level). The college won official approval to offer the 10-course subsea M.S. degree from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in September. Read More

UH-Led Workshop to Develop "Roadmap" for Brain-Controlled Prosthetics

Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal
The world's leading figures in the field of brain-machine interfaces (BMI) will gather in Houston next February to map the quickest route for bringing brain-controlled prosthetics to clinical patients. The International Workshop on Clinical Neural Brain-Machine Interface Systems is being chaired by Jose Luis "Pepe" Contreras-Vidal, professor of electrical and computer engineering with the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering. Co-hosting the event along with UH are The Methodist Hospital Research Institute and The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research, part of the Memorial Hermann hospital system. Read More

Researchers Put Infection Mechanism to Good Use through Protein Engineering

Graduate students and faculty members with the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering have found a way to turn bacteria's infection process into something that can actually benefit humans.Their work appeared in a paper recently published by the Journal of Biological Chemistry. The article was authored by Ph.D. student Balakrishnan Ramesh and post-doctoral researcher Dr. Victor Sendra, working with their faculty mentors, associate professor Patrick Cirino and assistant professor Navin Varadarajan, both in the college's Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. The paper outlines their work on a class of proteins known as autotransporters. Bacteria produce autotransporters and then move them to their outer surface, where they're involved in a number of processes, including recognizing other bacteria and infecting human cells.
