College Mourns Amundson's Passing
Neal Amundson, Cullen Professor Emeritus of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Professor of Mathematics, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at the age of 95. Widely regarded as the father of modern chemical engineering, Amundson was both a groundbreaking educator and researcher. There will be a memorial event to remember Dr. Amundson on March 14 at 9 a.m. in L2D2 Lecture Hall at the UH Cullen College of Engineering. Read More

Alum Named Engineer of the Year
The Houston EWeek Committee has named Cullen College alumnus Wayne Klotz (MSCE 1976) its 2011 Engineer of the Year. Klotz received the honor in recognition for his work with Klotz Associates, the civil engineering firm he co-founded, and for his service to the profession as national president of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He served as head of ASCE from November 2008 to November 2009. Read More

Annual EAA EWeek Reception Raises Money for Students
The University of Houston Engineering Alumni Association commemorated National Engineers Week by hosting its annual EWeek Reception and Program. The 60th Anniversary of EWeek kicked off on Sunday with events being held around the nation recognizing the contributions of engineers to society. EAA has raised more than $165,000 to support UH engineering students and organizations. Read More

Team Works to Cut Years Off Antibiotic Development Time
Eliminating tens of thousands of lab experiments, two UH professors are working to cut the development time of new antibiotics, which can often last more than a decade. Michael Nikolaou, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, and Vincent Tam, associate professor of clinical sciences, are developing a computerized modeling system that will help determine which dosing regimens for new and existing medications are most likely to be effective in combating infection and which are not worth pursuing. Professor Wins Grant from Semiconductor Giant
National Semiconductor, the world’s largest maker of analog circuits, has given $160,000 to a Cullen College of Engineering professor to develop new metal alloys for possible use in devices that require top-notch reliability.The grant to Stanko Brankovic, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, will be used to support two graduate students and to design and build an entirely new machine for testing the properties of these alloys. College Launches Subsea Engineering Certificate Program
The Cullen College of Engineering has officially launched a Subsea Engineering Certificate Program, the first and only formal subsea curriculum in the United States. The program was established in response to requests from several companies in the petroleum sector that indicated a need for engineers with the specialized skills to design and maintain the equipment and infrastructure used in offshore drilling. Grad Students Win National Recognition
Two Cullen College graduate students have recently been honored for their outstanding scholarship. Taraka Ravi Shankar Mullapudi, a Ph.D. candidate in civil and environmental engineering, won the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's 2011 Student Paper Competition for his paper, "Seismic Behavior of RC Structures Subjected to Combined Loading Including Torsion." Mona Meisami-Azad, a mechanical engineering Ph.D. student, won an Educational Award from the Association for Women in Science.
