UH Hurricane Conference Addresses Preparedness and Disaster Recovery
With hurricane season now in its most active period, public officials, researchers and businesspeople from the gulf coast region met at the University of Houston to discuss disaster preparedness, rapid recovery and coastal protection options. The gathering, “Hurricanes, Major Disasters, Coastal Protection and Rapid Recovery in Texas and the Gulf Coast Region,” was organized by the university’s Texas Hurricane Center for Innovative Technology. Professor Developing Injection-Based Paralysis Treatment
Individuals suffering from devastating spinal cord injuries may one day benefit from research being conducted at the UH Cullen College of Engineering. Dong Liu, assistant professor with the college’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, recently won a $390,000 collaborative research grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a new treatment. Faculty Developing New "Platform" to Fight Malaria
Two faculty members in the Cullen College of Engineering have been awarded a grant to create an entirely new platform for the development of antimalarial drugs. Jeffery Rimer and Peter Vekilov, both with the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, will explore the use of tailored inhibitors that allow a subunit of hemoglobin to kill the malaria parasite. Professor wins Maritime Security Grant
Christopher Chung, associate professor in the Cullen College’s Department of Industrial Engineering, has received a grant to develop a system to identify marine vessels as they enter sensitive areas. The system will be based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), a technology that allows for automatic communication between a small electronic tag and an RFID reader. Read More
